True Push-ups
by: Katie Russell, Bayou City CrossFit
Why the coaches stress push-ups so much? There are many advantages to doing true push-ups.
1. You are allowing the muscle full range of motion
2. You are getting stronger by each correct push-up you are doing
3. By getting stronger with push-ups, it carries over to better pull-ups
4. YOU’RE NOT CHEATING YOURSELF!
To me, the last one is most important. If you’re not doing each exercise correctly, then how are you going to get better and stronger?
This is why I stress CHEST TO GROUND! I truly want to see everyone kicking ass on push-ups because I know how hard they are and when you do them correctly and get through them, you get a feeling of accomplishment.
For the women, and some of the men, if you can’t do true push-ups on your toes, then go to your knees. There is no shame in doing push-ups on your knees. At least you can say you did true push-ups.
I understand the frustration behind push-ups on your toes. I remember when I was only able to do one or two at a time. I would be yelling out the common lines said during a WOD: “f*&@ push-ups” or “these are stupid.” I would get so down on myself because 1) it was slowing me down and 2) it was a weakness of mine. But I still had to do them. When you are doing a workout with push ups and want to sag your hips or go from toes to your knees just remember, every true push up you do makes you that much stronger. So for those who struggle with the dreadful push-ups, hang in there. You and your chest muscles will get stronger!
