I am certain my overall strength and cardiovascular endurance are better now after age 40 than at any time in my 20s and 30s.

Hometown: Lafayette, LA

Age: 41

Occupation:  Landman

When did you first start CrossFitting?: December 2014

When did you first start training at CrossFit Katy?: December 2014

What class do you generally attend (morning/afternoon)? 5:30 afternoon

Favorite WOD:

Anything with shorter distance running, double unders, pull-ups, or light barbell hang cleans.

Least Favorite WOD:

Maybe its recency bias, but I think 19.5 with thrusters and CTB pullups might have been the worst workout I’ve ever done, followed closely by a 3 person partner workout we did one time with the assault bike and synchro wall balls and synchro heavy power cleans.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

I played basketball on my middle school and high school teams and then did 24 Hour Fitness type gyms in college and after, but with no consistency at all.  When I first started oil & gas work I traveled most weeks and didn’t see the inside of a gym for about 5 years.  The group training structure of CrossFit has been a game changer for me when it comes to consistency.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit?

Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?  A friend of mine signed up for the free trial and really enjoyed it and suggested I give it a try.  Oddly enough, he stopped going after a couple months and I’m still here over four years later.  The only thing I remember from my first WOD, other than being completely wrecked, were the ladies were moving much heavier weight and finishing much faster than I was.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?

I am certain my overall strength and cardiovascular endurance are better now after age 40 than at any time in my 20s and 30s.  I’ve always been really lean, but I’ve been able to put on some weight and lean muscle, especially once I increased my workouts to 4-5 times a week.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

My energy levels throughout the day are much better than before starting Crossfit.  A lot of this has to do with my overall fitness, but I am also making much better food choices to perform better during workouts and recover better after workouts (excluding Proud Pie where they know me by name).

Name one goal you have reached since joining CFK and one goal you want to achieve (example:  deadlift/squat/press ___ pounds; do a pullup; do a WOD RX’d, etc.):

My initial goals were to complete most workouts and movements RX, which I am now able to do.  I am still unable to do bar or ring muscle-ups, but after this long, that is my own fault because I literally never work on them.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFK moments:

The Open is always fun to see how hard you can push and see improvements from the previous year.   Seeing the day to day encouragement everyone gives each other in the gym.

Any advice for people just getting started?

Consistency is the key, if you stick with it, the results will follow.  Scaling or modifying weights/movements might be the best way for you to get the intent of a workout, talk to the coaches about what is best for you.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I enjoy spending time with my wife, daughter, and three dogs, and relaxing at the neighborhood pools.  I am a huge New Orleans Saints (still bitter about the non-call) and Game of Thrones fan (not thrilled with the ending).
