Name:  Carly Campbell

Hometown: Lorena, TX

Age: 23

Occupation: PE Teacher and Coach

When did you first start doing CrossFit?: February 2022

When did you first start training at CrossFit Katy?: February 2022

What class do you generally attend (morning/afternoon)?

I try to go to 5:30pm but it sometimes changes depending on the sports season at work.

Favorite WOD:

Anything that involves running, handstands, or power cleans  :)

Least Favorite WOD:

Anything that involves Toes To Bar or overhead barbell work… yikes.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

I have been involved with sports since I was little. I grew up playing basketball, running track and pole vaulting, and was a cheerleader. I played one year of college basketball. After that ended, I would just run long distances and do free weight HIIT workouts to stay in shape.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... What was it, and how did it feel?

My brother introduced me to CrossFit and has been trying to get me to do it for years, but I have always said no. I would do some workouts with him when he came home from school but never tried it at an actual gym because I was scared. Finally, when I was in town visiting my brother and sister in law he talked me into coming and trying a class at CrossFit Katy. I can’t remember the exact workout but it involved burpee box jump overs and shoulder to overhead. My body hurt so bad afterwards and I was convinced that the odds of me ever coming back were slim. Little did I know I would end up moving to Katy and the gym would become one of my favorite places to be!

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?

Before I started CrossFit I was struggling with my weight. I was running when I could but was not doing enough or eating the right way. Since I have started CrossFit I have not only dropped my weight, but I have noticed a significant increase in strength. My body feels healthier and I definitely have noticed more toning.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced since starting CrossFit?

CrossFit has not only improved my physical health, but my mental health as well. I feel more happy and my confidence has increased. However, the community that CrossFit Katy has brought into my life has been the best part of joining the gym!  I moved to Katy a little over a year ago only knowing my brother Chase and his wife Becca. The gym has introduced me to so many awesome people, and I am so thankful for that.

Name one goal you have reached since joining CFK and one goal you want to achieve:

One goal that I have reached since joining CFK is being able to do a pull-up. It sounds like a small achievement but when I started 8 months ago I couldn’t even pull-myself up half-way, let alone string multiple together like I can now!

One goal (out of the many I have now) that I want to achieve at CFK is to be able to do a bar muscle up.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFK moments:

Any day at CFK is a good day! I would say one of my favorite things is after workouts when everyone is completely exhausted but we are able to come together and just talk about the day and week! I also enjoy going to competitions and cheering on everyone as they compete!

Any advice for people just getting started?

Don’t be afraid to put yourself outside of your comfort zone! CrossFit was always intimidating to me because I was scared that I wasn’t going to know what I was doing or be “good” enough. That stopped me from starting. If I would have put those fears aside I would have started getting into shape way earlier and made friendships sooner!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I am a Junior High PE teacher and coach and I love every day I get to spend at work with my students.  When I am not working, I enjoy spending time outdoors, at church, or with my family and friends. I also love finding new coffee shops, shopping, and taking naps!
