Name:  Dane Nelson

Hometown: Born in Austin Texas, moved around quite a bit since 2002, College Station, Miami, Savannah, Chicago.

Age:38

Occupation: Engineering Manager

When did you first start doing CrossFit?: January 2018

When did you first start training at CrossFit Katy?: July 2022

What class do you generally attend (morning/afternoon)? Typically afternoon

Favorite WOD: Helen.  I love anything with KBs and I’m ok with pull ups in small doses

Least Favorite WOD: Fran. Thrusters!

Tell us about your sports & fitness background: None really.  I was active in afterschool sports through middle school but it fell off in high school.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel? I traveled a lot for work at the time and some of my coworkers were crossfitters since it was easy to find a place to drop in.  I knew I needed to do something to stay active but have never had any luck holding myself accountable.  I tried a free class and really enjoyed the class structure and the community and support.  My first WOD I remember was rowing and high volume air squats.  I was so sore when I got home I couldn’t walk.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?  It’s been good for me.  I’m fitter and stronger than any time in my life and confident in my body’s ability to do the things I ask of it.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced since starting CrossFit?  It’s filled the role of a healthy hobby.  My typical evening was always going out to eat or sitting on the couch and watching TV and drinking beer.

Name one goal you have reached since joining CFK and one goal you want to achieve: Accomplished - Handstand walk   Goals - Bodyweight snatch, muscle ups

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFK moments:  I really enjoyed the competitions that CFK has put on.  Judging has been a blast and the sense of community with the rest of the gym is great.  Watching the workouts from a front row seat has been fun too.

Any advice for people just getting started? Don’t overthink it, just get started.  CrossFit is infinitely scalable, I had 0 ability when I got started and I’m glad I didn’t hesitate.  Start with quality motion and the rest will come naturally over time.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I enjoy day hikes a lot, I miss the weather in Chicago where you could go out all summer.  I like trying new beers, cooking, gardening, and computer games.
